AmbikaDhurandhar – The Trendsetter Who Painted Her Own Path
Imagine being a young girl in the 1930s when studying fine arts felt nearly impossible for women. But AmbikaDhurandhar didn’t let that stop her. Born in Mumbai in 1912, she grew up surrounded by art because her father, M. V. Dhurandhar, was a celebrated painter and the first Indian director of the Sir J. J. School of Art .
Home has a way of shaping us, and Ambika’s was no exception. Her mother’s encouragement and her father’s mentorship made art feel like breathing. So, in 1931, while most girls her age faced societal doubts, Ambika walked through the doors of the art school and turned heads - graduating top of her class and becoming one of the very first Indian women to earn a formal fine arts degree .
But she didn’t stop there. She painted with confidence- mythical scenes, historical moments, graceful figures- all carrying a gentle strength. Her “Coronation of ShivajiMaharaj” and “Goddess Ambika with Her Yoginis” won praise and awards . She even participated in a design competition for a royal scroll in Baroda and her work was one of two selected. It was a moment that led her to meet the Maharaja .
Ambika travelled with her family across India and Europe, absorbing stories and art. After her father passed away in 1944, she didn’t stop. Instead, she carried forward his legacy- creating exhibitions, running the Dhurandhar Art School in Mumbai and mentoring passionate young artists .
Ambika passed
away in 2009, but she left behind more than art, she left a message: when you
dare to follow your passion against all odds, you change the world. For
students, her life is a lesson that your dreams matter. Chase them.
