G. R.
Santosh: The Mystic Painter of Kashmir
Ghulam Rasool
Santosh, fondly known as G. R. Santosh - was born in 1929 in Srinagar, Kashmir.
Life wasn’t exactly smooth for him. He grew up in a modest household and had to
juggle different jobs just to keep things going. But no matter what he did for
a living, his heart kept pulling him back toward two things - art and
spirituality.
He began his
formal training at the Maharaja’s Technical Institute in Srinagar, where he
learned the basics of painting and drawing. Later, a scholarship took him to
Baroda. It was a turning point that broadened his vision. There he crossed
paths with legendary painter S. H. Raza and poet Keshav Mali. This meeting left
a deep imprint on his creative journey.
What made
Santosh’s art stand out was its strong spiritual undercurrent. Drawing
inspiration from Kashmir Shaivism and Indian Tantric philosophy- he filled his
canvases with bold, colorful geometrical patterns and sacred symbols. His
paintings weren’t just meant to be looked at, they were meant to be
experienced.
In the 1960s,
Santosh became one of the leading figures of the Neo-Tantric art movement in
India. His works used to display sacred shapes, cosmic energy and meditative
symbols.
Recognition
followed. In 1977, he was honored with the Padma Shri and just two years later,
he received the Sahitya Akademi Award. This time not for painting, but for his
poetry. Yes, Santosh wasn’t just a painter of forms and colors- he also painted
with words.
He passed
away in 1997 but his legacy still continues. His art reminds us that true
creativity comes not only from the brush, but also from the spirit within.
