Gobardhan Ash
- Colours of Change
Gobardhan Ash
was born in Begampur, West Bengal in 1907. He grew up watching rural life, and
nature. These elements later became the soul of his works. Because Ash believed
that art must reflect both the heart and the times we live in.
He began his
artistic journey at the Government School of Art in Calcutta. But his vision
soon changed a lot. In 1933, he co-founded the Art Rebel Centre along with Atul
Bose. He wanted to break away from rigid traditions and encourage young artists
to find their own voices. Then he also joined the Calcutta Group. It really
played a key role in shaping modern Indian art.
Ash’s
paintings used to carry deep social undertones - he believed art must speak for
the common man. His style merged Indian themes with a modernist approach. He
created works that were powerful yet subtle. Interestingly, he was also
influenced by theatre and literature. It gave his art a dramatic and narrative
edge.
Over the
years, Gobardhan Ash’s works were exhibited across India and abroad. He gained
respect from critics and admirers both. He was also awarded the
AbanindranathPuraskar in 1990 - one of Bengal’s highest honors in the arts.
He passed
away in 1996 but his legacy still continues to inspire us. Ash proved that art
is not just about beauty - it is also about courage. Gobardhan Ash remains a
guiding light in India’s modern art movement.
