Tallur: From Karnatka to the World
Laxmi Narayan
Tallur, better known as L.N. Tallur is one of India’s most exciting
contemporary artists. He was born in 1971 in Karnataka. He grew up surrounded
by traditional Indian culture but later studied both in India and the UK. This
mix of backgrounds shaped his style. His style is rooted in tradition yet open
to global influences. Today, he splits his time between India and South Korea.
His works surprise and make people stop to think.
Tallur
doesn’t like to limit himself to one kind of material. His art can involve
stone, wood, metal, coins, magnets or even computer parts. By using such
unusual combinations - he explores the push and pull.
What’s
fascinating is how he put humor into deep, sometimes uncomfortable subjects. At
first glance, some of his sculptures might look playful or quirky but when you
pause, they raise serious questions about society of belief systems.
Tallur’s
works have travelled far and wide, from the Smithsonian’s Sackler Gallery in
Washington, D.C., to the Arario Gallery in Seoul. In 2012, he was awarded the
prestigious Skoda Prize for contemporary art in India.
For students
and art lovers - his journey is a reminder that you don’t have to choose
between tradition and modernity, you can carry both. Tallur shows us that art
can be fun and thoughtful, local yet global, ancient in spirit but futuristic
in form. This is why, he is seen as one of the most creative voices in
contemporary Indian art.
