M. K.
Parandekar: The Master of Realism
Madhav
Krishna Parandekar was born in 1877 in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. He was one of
those artists who carried the torch of academic realism into modern India. He
lived a long, fulfilling life dedicated to art. He is an artist that still
inspires young painters.
Parandekar’s
journey began at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay. There, he trained under
the influence of masters who shaped generations of Indian artists. He soon got
the prestigious Mayo Scholarship due to his brilliance. That took him to Europe
in 1905. Then, he studied at the Royal College of Art in London and later in
Paris. This exposed him to the techniques of the European academic style.
This
international experience made him one of the earliest Indian artists to master
oil painting and portraiture in the Western sense. But he still kept his Indian
roots alive.
He was also
associated with legends like Ravi Varma’s circle of influence and carried
forward that legacy. His works majorly celebrated Indian culture and historical
figures, with striking realism.
Parandekar’s
portraits were highly loved by the Indian elite. He also made a mark as a
teacher. He guided younger artists to embrace discipline in their craft. His
contribution was recognized with awards such as the Gold Medal at the Bombay
Art Society exhibitions. This was his stature among the top painters of his
time.
He passed
away in 1960. Even today, M. K. Parandekar is remembered as a bridge between
Indian tradition and European academic art. He was someone who proved that
Indian painters could excel on the world stage without losing their own
identity.
