N. S. Bendre:
The One Who Shaped Modern Indian Art
Nandlal Bose
once said that a true artist paints not only what he sees - but also what he
feels. N. S. Bendre lived this truth throughout his life. He was born in 1910
in Indore. He grew up with a love for drawing that later took him to the Sir J.
J. School of Art in Bombay. It is one of India’s best-known art schools.
In starting,
Bendre painted in a naturalistic style that was influenced by European
traditions. But he was never satisfied with staying in one mold. He kept
searching for new ways to express himself. This hunger for change eventually
led him to Baroda. There, he began teaching at M. S. University. Then he also
helped in forming the Baroda Group. This step went on to shape the modern
Indian art.
Bendre was
not afraid to experiment. After travelling to Europe and the U.S. - his art
became a mix of Indian subjects and modernist ideas. One interesting fact about
him is that he used to blend folk designs with bold, experimental techniques.
This made his paintings both simple for the common viewer and deeply thoughtful
for art lovers.
His
contributions were widely recognized. He received the Padma Bhushan in 1969,
and was also awarded the Lalit Kala Akademi Fellowship. Yet, his biggest
achievement may be the many students he mentored in Baroda. He encouraged them
to take risks and find their own voices. This is how he taught the future
generations of artists.
N. S. Bendre
passed away in 1992 but his works still inspired us. He showed that an artist’s
true strength lies in painting beyond boundaries.
