Paritosh Sen
- A Strong Voice in Modern Indian Art
Paritosh Sen
was born in 1918 in Dhaka that is now in Bangladesh. Sen grew up in a time of
social and political revolution. His childhood experiences shaped his eye for
emotions. Later it became the main theme of his art.
In the 1940s,
Sen moved to Calcutta and became one of the founding members of the Calcutta
Group - the first modern art movement in India. This was revolutionary because
artists of the time were still tied to traditional styles. But Sen and his
peers wanted to show the realities of a changing society. His art used to
capture everyday people - workers, neighbors, strangers. He painted them with a
touch of satire.
Sen also
studied in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts. There he got influenced by
European masters like Picasso and Matisse. You can see traces of that modernist
energy in his bold lines and figures. Interestingly, he was also a writer and
teacher. So he also shared his love for art through essays and lectures.
Sen’s
paintings were sometimes humorous, sometimes biting but always alive. One
amazing fact is that he worked well into his 90s. It proves that art was his
lifelong passion. He was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2004 for his
contribution to Indian art.
Paritosh Sen
passed away in 2008. But his fearless spirit that he brought to modern Indian
art is still alive. His works remind us that art is not just about beauty - it
is about telling the truth of the times we live in.
