Ram Kumar: A
Poet with Colours
Ram Kumar
(1924–2018) was one of India’s most celebrated modern artists. He was known for
turning emotions into powerful landscapes. Ram Kumar was born in Shimla in
1924. He grew up surrounded by mountains and nature. It had a deep influence in
his art.
At first,
Kumar studied economics in Delhi but his heart was always with painting. He
trained at the SaradaUkil School of Art and later travelled to Paris in the
late 1940s. There, he met great artists like Fernand Léger and even befriended
fellow Indian painter S. H. Raza. This exposure to European modernism helped
him find his own unique voice.
In his early
years, Ram Kumar painted people. He showed the loneliness and the struggles of
modern city life. But soon, he shifted to abstract landscapes. His paintings of
Benaras are especially famous. Well, without even showing temples or crowds -
he captured the city’s spirit through colors and moods. Many viewers say his
work feels almost like poetry in canvas.
A fun fact,
Kumar was also a writer and he published short stories in Hindi. He showed his
gift with words as well as paintings. His dual identity as both a painter and a
writer made him stand apart in Indian art.
Ram Kumar
earned a lot of respect worldwide. His works were exhibited in Paris, New York,
Tokyo and beyond. He was honored with the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The two
of India’s highest civilian awards.
Recently, Ram
Kumar passed away in 2018 at the age of 94. But his legacy of art still speaks
powerfully. He showed the world that landscapes are not just scenery - they can
carry human emotions and struggles.
